Description
Sub-products from the agricultural industry are being used as low cost renewable raw materials for the preparation of Ecomaterials designed for use in multiple industrial processes of great interest. Applications are being developed in the preparation of biomaterials fortissue replacement therapies in the area of bone and teeth, Biorefinery processes, catalysis with alternative energy sources and improved enzymatic catalysis, using where possible cost effective low toxicity renewable raw materials, are being developed.
Uses for silica derived from rice husk or rice husk ash are being investigated. Through thermal chemical and sol gel processing mesoporous silicas with areas ranging from 30 to 600 m2g-1 have been developed for use, amongst others, in the detergent industry as a low cost porous material to support enzymes.
